SuMo praises Centre’s refusal to buckle under WTO pressure

Patna,(BiharTimes): Former deputy CM and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi hailed the Narendra Modi government’s refusal to buckle under the pressure of the US and European Union at the recent World Trade Organisation (WTO) meet on the issue of subsidy to Indian farmers and continuation of minimum support price (MSP) of their crop produce.
In a statement Modi said the USA and European countries applied immense pressure on the Indian delegation at the WTO meet to agree to the conditions of the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) that wanted India to withdraw subsidy to farmers and also MSP.
SuMo, who also served as the state’s finance minister for about eight years, said the stance of the US and the European Union towards the stand of India on the matter is lopsided and partisan as they themselves have been giving subsidy to the tune of $400 billion (Rs 24,000 crore) to their farmers.
The NDA government, he said, showed its commitment to protect the interests of farmers while the outgoing UPA government at the Centre had willy-nilly agreed to sign on the dotted line of the TFA as desired by the US and European countries.
