Army Major accuses wife, Colonel of adultery

Patna,(BiharTimes): An army Major of Danapur cantonment, Dr Binod Kumar, has filed a case of adultery against Colonel Ravi Chander. He claimed to have caught the latter in compromising position with his wife at his own quarter on December 9 night.

According to the Major when he raised alarm the Colonel, along with the wife, assaulted him and threatened him of dire consequences. The Colonel also snatched the mobile phone through which he took a couple of snaps of the two.Dr Kumar, in an FIR lodged with the Danapur police station on Wednesday evening, said his wife came in contact with Colonel Ravi Chander when she was appointed teacher of the Army’s primary school last year. Colonel Chander is the chairman of the school committee.

Patna SP (City) Shivdeep Lande, who visited the cantonment on Thursday, while quoting from the FIR, said that when Dr Kumar came to know about their liaisons, the latter asked the wife to quit the job. She refused, though the Major kept on counselling her, reminding her about the social stigma attached to such acts. They have an eight-year-old son.

According to the FIR on December 9 evening while having dinner before going for night duty, Dr (Major) Kumar, overheard his wife talking to someone over phone.“I went for duty and returned home around 11:30 PM for a surprise check,” the FIR said adding he found Colonel Chander and his wife in a compromising position.

Dr Kumar claimed he had taken at least two photographs of the Colonel and his wife with his cellphone for using them as evidence against the illicit affair. “But as I shouted at them and tried to call police, they pounced on me and snatched my cellphone,” the FIR said. Not only that, the Major alleged, Colonel Chander threatened to get him fired from the Army medical services “within two days” and fled with his cellphone. The Major alleged his wife did not have any remorse. Instead she threatened to cut her wrist if he took any action.

“I have informed the GOC (General Officer Commanding) of Danapur sub-area (Maj Gen Sanjeev Jaitley) about the Colonel’s act involving moral turpitude”, he said.Lande told the media that the FIR had been lodged under Indian Penal Code’s Sections 497 (sex with another man’s wife without her husband’s consent), 341 (wrongfully restraining someone), 323 (causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult and intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 379 (theft) and 34 (committing a crime together with someone else).

A convict under Section 497 may be punished with imprisonment up to five years or with fine or with both. Though Dr Kumar has also named his wife as an accused, Section 497 says the wife shall not be punishable as an abettor in such a case.An offence under Section 506 is punishable with imprisonment up to seven years, the SP said adding though the Army has separate rules to deal with such cases involving its forces,

Patna Police would take action on the FIR lodged with it. If need be, the polce can even arrest Colonel Chander after getting approval from the Army authority concerned.
