Patna, Jan 2 (IANS) A top Bihar police official was Thursday sent to Kolkata to meet the family of the 16-year-old girl who died after she was raped twice by a gang and set ablaze, officials said.

On Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's directive, Director General (Special Branch) G.S. Gangwar will meet the girl's family to provide help and discuss the case with West Bengal Police, said an official at the police headquarters.

"An ex gratia payment of Rs.1 lakh was also given to the girl's family from the Chief Ninister's Fund," said an official from the Chief Minister's Office.

The girl's father, a taxi driver, is a native of Bihar.

The girl was allegedly twice raped by a gang in October. She breathed her last Tuesday at a hospital in Kolkata after she was admitted with severe burn injuries Dec 23.

Believed to have attempted suicide, the victim in her dying declaration said two of the rape accused set her on fire.

Police have initiated murder charges against the accused, six of whom are behind bars in West Bengal.
