Jathedar, three others injured in clash on Guru Govind Singh birth anniversary


Patna,(BiharTimes): Gyani Iqbal Singh, the jathedar (chief) of Patna Saheb gurdwara, and his son, Guru Prakash Singh and two other persons were injured after a clash broke out over the appointment of his deputy in Patna on Tuesday during the 347th birth anniversary celebrations of the 10th Sikh guru, Govind Singh.

The clash started in the morning after the jathedar opposed the induction of a granthi, second in rank in a religious celebrations in the gurdwara, into Patna Saheb.

Reports said that the announcement of Pratap Singh, the head granthi of Nader Sahib in Punjab, being appointed as deputy at Patna Saheb sparked off the altercation. Gyani Iqbal Singh and his son were among those who opposed it.

The rival group, said to be from Punjab, got upset and with sword in hand virtually went on warpath on the gurdwara premises.

Patna senior superintendent of police Manu Maharaj said an FIR has been lodged against Kashmira Singh, a resident of Punjab, and six others. The matter is being investigated.

On the other hand Gyani Iqbal Singh, said he was shocked to know that the management committee had nominated an additional granthi without taking his consent.

Gurdwara general secretary Charanjeet Singh told the media that he had not removed jathedar Iqbal Singh. The management felt the need of an additional granthi for the 350th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Guru Govind Singhji Maharaj in 2017.
