Patna has highest GDDP in Bihar, Seohar lowest

Patna,(BiharTimes): Patna district has registered the highest per capita gross district domestic product (GDDP) of Rs 57,843 in 2010-11 over 2004-05 constant prices, while Sheohar registered the lowest per capita GDDP of Rs 6,209. The per capita GDDP of Munger is Rs 21,019, second only to Patna.
According to the data released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) under planning and development department, Purnea, Kishanganj and Katihar have slipped further on the district domestic product ladder.
While Purnea, Kishanganj and Katihar ranked 16, 15 and eight respectively on the district domestic product indicator in 2004-05 they slipped to 24, 28 and 13 in 2010-11. The condition of Araria has slightly improved from 33 to 30.
Similar is the story of Supaul and Madhepura. Khagaria has improved its position from 31 in 2004-05 to 21 in 2010-11, while Saharsa remained at 10 both in 2004-05 and 2010-11. Supaul and Madhepura, which ranked 26 and 23 respectively in 2004-05, have slipped to 34 and 36 in 2010-11.
The data was released by Vijoy Prakash, the principal secretary of planning and development department, at Soochana Bhavan in Patna on Monday.
Districts like Supaul, Araria, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnea have traditionally been relatively less developed with a sizeable Muslim, Dalit and backward population. They witnessed massive destruction because of breach in the Kosi embankment at Kusaha in Nepal in August 2008. Thousands of people and cattle were swept away and 3.3 million people were displaced. The deluge had a devastating impact on the local economy.
The per capita GDDP of Patna is over four times more than the per capita gross state domestic product (GSDP) of the state, which is Rs 13,404. Interestingly, the per capita GDDP of three districts––other than Patna and Munger––is also more than the state average. The figure of Begusarai is Rs 18,447, Bhagalpur at Rs 15,886 and Muzaffarpur at Rs 14,097.
However, among all 38 districts, Sheohar has shown the lowest per capita GDDP at Rs 6,209. The three districts whose per capita GDDP hover around in its vicinity are Banka with per capita GDDP of Rs 7,764, Madhepura with its per capita GDDP of Rs 8,102, and Arwal placed slightly higher than it at Rs 8,148.
The per capita GDDP of Munger district has achieved the highest growth rate of 10.03%, followed by Bhojpur (9.16%), Nalanda (8.79%) and Begusarai (8.61%). The districts with lowest growth rate in the same category are Madhepura (3.74%), Jamui (3.80%), Banka (4%) and Supaul (4.36%).
Patna, Rohtas, Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Begusarai, Munger and Saharsa have maintained the same position as was in the last base year. Eighteen districts have improved their ranking while 12 districts have declined in position.
