Centre gives green signal for 4,000 MW ultra mega-power plant in Banka


Patna,(BiharTimes): The Union government has given its green signal to the construction of first-ever 4,000MW ultra mega-power plant (UMPP) at Kakwara in Banka district of Bihar. This was communicated by Union power minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, in a letter to his Bihar counterpart, Bijendra Prasad Yadav.
Bihar has already acquired 2,500 acres, while 120 cusecs of water is available.
The Union minister’s letter, said a special purpose vehicle would be created for approval of the coal linkage. Sources said 18/20 million tonnes of coal would be required per annum for the project.
According to H R Pandey, spokesman of Bihar State Power (Holding) Company Limited (BSPHCL) the project would need an investment of Rs 28,000 crore
In 2012, a high-level central team of experts from the ministry of power and Central Electricity Authority had assessed the viability of a mega power plant in Banka district. The team had also explored geographical locations through satellite.
