As CM I granted extension to CBI director’s father-in-law: Lalu

Patna,(BiharTimes): Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad Yadav, said on Monday that he had granted service extension to 100 officers, including Gajendra Narayan, now a retired IPS officer and father-in-law of the present CBI director, Ranjit Sinha, during his tenure as the chief minister of Bihar in early 1990s.

Replying to 31 questions posed by the Ranchi special CBI judge A K Rai during the proceedings of a fodder scam case in which statement of accused persons were being recorded under Section 313 of CrPC, he also said that he had granted an extension to the father of then Superintendent of Police in CBI Rakesh Asthana, who is now a senior officer posted in Gujarat.

But reports quoting sources claimed that Asthana’s father, a teacher in a prestigious school, had retired in 1981 while Lalu became the chief minister of Bihar for the first time on March 10,1990.

Reports also said that Lalu had also appointed retired judge Justice Ali Ahmed, father of the then CBI officer Jawed Ahmed, as chairman of a commission constituted to look into excess withdrawal from the state treasury just days after the fodder scam surfaced in 1996.

The case is related to illegal withdrawal of Rs 96 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury in the 1990s.

During the course of his questioning, Lalu was asked by the Special CBI judge if he had, during his stint as the chief minister, granted extensions to several of the fodder scam accused.

Lalu argued his own case for over four hours.
