MCI denies permission for admission to IGIMS, Bettiah college

Patna,(BiharTimes): Following the Medical Council of India’s refusal to accept the compliance report sent by Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna, Vardhvan Medical College, Pawapuri and Government Medical College, Bettiah, for continuing the MBBS course the three institutes would not be able to take fresh admission this year.

The MCI had last year denied permission for admission to them.

However, it was after the then chief minister Nitish Kumar’s intervention and undertaking by chief secretary Ashok Kumar Sinha to MCI that they got permission to admit MBBS students. They had 100 MBBS seats each.

The MCI took the decision after it found that the three institutes lack infrastructure facilities. Its officials were reportedly not happy with the compliance report that had been sent by the state to seek MCI’s approval for the continuance of the course.

An MCI team had visited these institutes in January last.

Thus the admission in the fourth batch of MBBS of IGIMS and second batch of Government Medical College, Bettiah, has come under cloud so in the Pawapuri Medical College.

It is a setback to the medical aspirants as the number of those taking admission would come down by a couple of hundreds this year.

Official sources has questioned the MCI stand and said that the MCI is a bit harsh on the Bihar government medical colleges than private colleges.

However, senior doctors like Dr Ajay Kumar accepted that there is red-tapism and delay in appointment of teachers in IGIMS, which is an autonomous institute. He called for more autonomy.
