Bihar fourth in sending migrant workers abroad

Patna,(BiharTimes): With 84,000 Bihar is fourth from the top in the states, which had sent migrant workers to foreign countries, especially Gulf nations, in 2012.

Uttar Pradesh, with 1.9 lakh, topped the list to be followed by Kerala (98,000) and Andhra Pradesh (92,000).

After Bihar comes the number of Tamil Nadu (78,000), Rajasthan (50,000) and Punjab and West Bengal, both around 37,000.

So Uttar Pradesh, being the most populated state in the country, has now left behind Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

Siwan and Gopalganj are among the top two districts of Bihar, which send workers abroad, especially Middle East.

According to the data provided by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs Saudi Arabia is the main destination for Indian labourers. Over 35 lakh Indian labourers went there between 2008 and 2012.
This was followed by United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Malaysia, Bahrain and Jordan.

Now Indian migrant workers go to Afghanistan, Indonesia, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Thailand and Yemen. After 2010 some Indians even went to war-torn Iraq.

Nearly 7.5 lakh Indian workers migrated to these countries in just one year, 2012.

The number of workers for Punjab have fallen considerably, from 54,000 in 2008 to 37,000 in 2012. It is also interesting to note that Punjab sends so many workers abroad, while neighbouring Haryana sent only 1,200 in 2012.
