For Lalu winning Patliputra is no less important than capturing Delhi

Patna,(BiharTimes): The high drama involving Misa Bharati and Ram Kripal Yadav in Patna as well as Delhi is being interpreted in different ways.

While a strong secion of public opinion and partymen feel that Ram Kripal should have got the ticket from Patliputra as he was a senior and a very committed leader of the party the other section feels that his claim in the post-delimitation Patna is not so strong. Yes, he had contested and represented this constituency in the past when there was neither Patna Saheb nor Patliputra. He contested from the then Patna parliamentary constituency.

In 2009 the RJD had to leave Patna Saheb parliamentary constituency to the then alliance partner the Lok Janshakti Party while this time the Congress has staked its claim. In that way the RJD found itself in a difficult position. Similarly it had to compromise Muzaffarpur to the Congress party. RJD’s state president, Ram Chandra Purbey, was all set to contest from that constituency.

However, RJD had to literally fight for the Madhubani parliamentary seat from where its candidate and another senior leader, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, is to contest. The Congress was staking its claim on it. But it had to give up the seat because it was Siddiqui, who lost to Hukum Deo Narayan Yadav of the BJP by a narrow margin in 2009. Dr Shakeel Ahmed, the Cognress party general secretary, was pushed to the third position.

As Lalu is not very sure about Rabri Devi’s victory from Saran, from where the BJP is most likely to put up Rajiv Pratap Rudy, a former Union minister, he decuded to put up Misa Bharati from another safe seat, that is, Patliputra. It has a sizeable Yadav as well as Muslim population. Besides, it is in Patliputra constituency that Misa was born and brought up and it was here that her sasural (in-laws place) is situated. Lalu lost this seat to former friend-turned-foe, Dr Ranjan Yadav of Janata Dal (United) by a slender margin of just 10,000 votes.

Lalu knows that if Rabri Devi loses and Misa does not contest it would mean end of his political career in Delhi too. The family will not only lose the MP quarter but all the perks and other facilities. The loss of base in the national capital would further diminish the stature of Lalu Yadav in the politics in Delhi.

He knows that without winning his battle in Patliputra he would not be able to reach Hastinapur.
