Bihar minister attacked by mob in Sasaram temple during Navaratra celebrations

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar minister of art and culture, Vinay Bihari, was late on Monday evening attacked by a furious mob at the famous Tarachandi temple in Sasaram, where a cultural programme was organized by the administration as part of Navaratra celebrations.

The minister, himself a folk singer, inaugurated the programme at which he sang religious songs. A couple of other folk singers were also scheduled to perform.

According to the minister, who suffered injuries in head and chin, an abortive attempt was made to burn him alive. He alleged conspiracy behind the incident by asking why only his car was torched. He also held the district administration responsible for the incident as district magistrate and superintendent of police of Rohtas and other officials were present on the occasion.

Though the minister’s car was set ablaze a dozen other vehicles were damaged and at least 100 people were injured or bruised.

Reports said that the crowd became restive and started creating disturbances because of what they alleged poor sound and sitting arrangements. Some of them started hurling chairs towards the dais.
The situation turned ugly when police started caning them after a chair fell on SP Chandan Kumar Kushwaha.

The mob turned wild and started pelting stones at the police. The angry mood of the mob compelled the minister and officials to scurry for cover.

The minister told the media on Tuesday morning that had he not hidden himself under the dais for over two hours, he would have been roasted alive.

Bihari demanded a high level inquiry and held the local administration responsible for the incident.
The SP said the police have lodged an FIR against 500 unidentified people and arrested six accused. A bottle of petrol was also recovered from the possession of one of them.

DM R K Jha said the administration could not make adequate arrangements for the security of the minister due to delayed information about his visit.

However, the minister said the administration was informed about his visit a month back.
