Bihar govt denying PAC chief post to opposition leader: SuMo

Patna,(BiharTimes): Stating that various anti-corruption institutions in the state have deliberately been weakened by the Janata Dal (United) government in the year 2014 senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday alleged that action against corrupt officials and confiscation of their assets have been slowed down. Over 35,000 cases are lying pending in State Information Commission, but the state decreased the number of its members from five to three.

In a statement he said fake cases were imposed on 454 persons who sought information under RTI. So far, 40 RTI activists have been killed in Bihar.

The former deputy chief minister said that the state government had changed the law with much fanfare in January 2012 to have a three-member Lokayukta, but appointed just one, keeping two posts vacant.
The Lokayukta was supposed to probe into corruption right from the chief minister to peon, but it never took off. SuMo charged that the state government broke the tradition and gave the post of Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee to the leader of a supporting political party, that is, the RJD, and not to the main opposition party, the BJP.

Incidentally, till June 16. 2013 the RJD was the main opposition party in Bihar and the BJP was in the government of the Nitish Kumar. Most of the RTI activists in the state were killed when the saffron party too was in the power.
