Patwatoli keeps upto the expectation: Girl among 12 who crack IIT
Patna,(BiharTimes): More than a dozen students again cracked from Patwatoli locality of Manpur block of Gaya district cracked the joint engineering exam of IIT this year. For the first time a girl from this locality also cleared the examination.
Students of this locality of Patwas (weavers, an extremely backward castes of Bihar) have been cracking IIT since 1992. Jitendra Kumar was the first to do that. Now he is settled in USA. Hundreds of the students from this locality are now placed on top jobs in India and abroad.
These students purely rely on their group study as they can’t afford costly coaching. Most of their parents are illiterate or semi literate. Students get guidance from their seniors who work as their mentors.
It is the performance of the students of Patwatoli, which inspired philanthropists to come up with Super-30, Rahmani-30, Magadh Super-30 etc.
But unfortunately these students did not get initial media coverage as there was no one to market their achievement. It was in 2002 that a journalist from Patna who first broke the story. Since then it has been attracting media coverage.
Though almost all the house in this village of 10,000 has a power loom yet the upcoming generation is shifting towards other business as their traditional occupation is not yielding good return. Most of the students are opting for engineering, medical and other competitive exams.
Students of this locality in the suburb of Gaya town have been cracking IIT even before reservation policy was adopted for OBC.
It may be a coincidence that one of those who floated the idea of the Super-30, Rahmani-30 and Magadh-30 was former DGP of Bihar, Abhayanand, who originally hails from Gaya so was the journalist, who first broke the story for Asian Age in 2002, that is, Soroor Ahmed.
