Bihar CM writes to PM, again seeks special category status

Patna,(BiharTimes): Reacting to Union finance minister Arun Jaitley’s lecture in California (the United States) on the issue of Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday wrote another letter to prime minister Narendra Modi demanding speedy action on the state government’s demand of special category status and special financial assistance.

The letter also urged the PM to provide special assistance to Bihar on the lines of truncated Andhra Pradesh after the creation of Telangana.

Jaitley said at the Stanford University in California that the Centre would go all out to support Bihar in a big way and is likely to announce projects and schemes in a few weeks time to assist the resource-rich state.

It is upon this that Nitish wrote: “Today, it has come to our knowledge that Jaitley has made a statement in California (US), hinting that a financial assistance is likely to be given to Bihar soon. As reported in news, Jaitley has said that ‘Bihar is a state with a lot of potential. It is a state which has less industries, which has human resources and agriculture. Therefore, for an equitable development of the country Bihar needs to be supported.’ We await with expectations that this will fructify into something concrete and will not be just another announcement as in the past.”

According to the two-page letter, whose copy has been sent to Jaitley too, in the past nine years, the state government has been working tirelessly for all-round development of Bihar so that the state can stand along with the developed states.

“If something concrete and meaningful has to be done, the Centre should seriously consider the detailed proposal (of the Bihar government) which confirms to the aspirations of the people of state and act accordingly,” the letter said.
