Nitish announces Women Empowerment Policy on the occasion of Bihar Diwas

Patna,(BiharTimes): Chief minister Nitish Kumar announced the Women Empowerment Policy on the occasion of Bihar Diwas on Sunday. The new policy would work for the empowerment of women in the state.

Speaking at the main function at Gandhi Maidan he said that Bihar was the first state to empower women in urban and local bodies. “The Constitution provides at least 33 per cent reservation for women, but we gave 50 per cent quota to them. Several other states followed us,” he said.

He said Bihar was the first state to fix 35 per cent quota for womn in police––from the post of constable to sub- inspector. This was done to instil a sense of security among them.

Emphasizing on women education the chief minister said that women education helps decrease fertility rate. In the families where women are 10th pass the fertility rate is two, but where they are 12th pass it is 1.7.

Claiming that he is for the inclusive growth of the state he said that it can not be possible without giving women their due share. He quoted Socialist ideologue Ram Manohar Lohia and JP in this regard.

The chief minister said in one decade between 2001 and 2011 the state witnessed fastest growth rate in literacy and was duly awarded. The literacy rate of women grew much faster.

However, there is scope for more work in this direction. Nitish said that he does not favour the concept of development in which the per capita income increases yet poverty remains as it is. “In contrast we want the inclusive development where all sections of the society develop,” he added.

Nitish said that Bihar Diwas is celebrated not just to remember the glorious past of the state, but also learn lesson from it too.

He once again evoked Bihari sub-nationalism and said that the people of the state would no more tolerate ‘apmaan’ (insult or humiliation) but deserves ‘samman’ (respect). Several senior ministers of the Nitish cabinet were present on the occasion. The celebration would continue for three days.

Earlier, the chief minister announced several developmental projects on the occasion of Bihar Diwas.
