Red signal to Greenpeace projects in Bihar

Patna,(BiharTimes): Uncertainty looms large over the fate of projects undertaken by Greenpeace India in Bihar after the Narendra Modi government decided to block its bank accounts in India.

Only sometimes back it installed a solar power pumping system at Kalyanbigha, the native village of chief minister Nitish Kumar in Nalanda district.Reports said that it has barely been left with funds to pay
salaries to its employees and meet other establishment cost for a month.

One of Greenpeace important projects was launched at Dharnai village in Jehanabad district. With the launch of solar-powered micro-grid the village was declared energy-independent last year.

The 100 kilowatt micro-grid, first-of-its-kind in the state, provides 24-hour electricity to more than 450 households (a population of about 2,400) and 50 commercial establishments at this village. About 70kW is supplied to them and 30kW to 10 water pumping systems of three horsepower each.

Built at the cost of Rs three crore the micro-grid also supplies energy to 60 street lights, two schools, one health centre, one Farmers’ Training Centre and 50 commercial establishments.

The solar power pumping system at Kalyanbigha shows how renewable energy can benefit people of rural areas.Greenpeace started its operation in Bihar in 2010. Recently this NGO has taken up a project at Kedia village under Barhat block in Jamui district for making it a model organic village. The local farmers have taken the lead in shunning chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
