RLSP legislator dies, Bihar assembly adjourned

 


Patna, Nov 30 (IANS) The Bihar assembly was adjourned on Monday, the first day of its session post elections, following the death of RLSP's Basant Kumar. With this, the RLSP now has only member in the house.

Protem Speaker Sadanand Singh said a decision was taken to adjourn the house till 10 a.m. on Tuesday after condolences were paid to Basant Kumar, who was elected from Harlekhi constituency and died early on Monday.

Basant Kumar, one of only two Rashtriya Lok Samata Party legislators in the 243-member house, died even before he could take oath as a new member.

Sadanand Singh earlier welcomed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav, the council of ministers and newly elected legislators to the house, convened for a nine-day winter session.

Both Nitish Kumar and Tejaswi Yadav expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.

According to officials, the first two days of the session have been earmarked for oath taking by the 243 legislators including 99 first-timers.

This will be followed by the election of a new speaker in place of Uday Narain Choudhary, who was defeated in the polls.

Governor Ramnath Kovind will address a joint sitting of the newly-constituted assembly and the council on December 3.
