BJP, allies disrupt Bihar assembly over flood situation

Patna, Aug 1 (IANS) The opposition BJP and its allies on Monday created a ruckus in the Bihar Assembly demanding discussion on the grim flood situation in the state.

Soon after the assembly sat for the day, Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar demanded discussion on the flood situation during question hour.

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies shouted slogans that disrupted the assembly proceedings during the question hour.

Prem Kumar said that a special discussion on the worsening flood situation is the need of the hour as nearly three million people have been affected by the flood and 28 people have died so far.

"The flood victims are fighting for survival, the relief and rescue operations are very slow, people are facing food, drinking water shortages and cattle the fodder scarcity," he said.

He blamed the state government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for not being sensitive to the problems of flood victims.

The Bihar assembly monsoon session began last Friday. The session will have five sittings and conclude on August 4.

The proposed Bihar Excise Amendment Bill is to be introduced on Monday.

The ruling grand alliance of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress is supporting the proposed bill but the BJP and its allies have announced they would oppose the legislation.
