Ex-servicemen feel the pinch of liquor ban in Bihar

Patna,(BiharTimes): Over one lakh ex-servicemen of Bihar have not received their monthly quota of liquor ever since the total prohibition was imposed on April 5 last.

Army cantonment areas had been exempted from the new law as they regulate sale and consumption of alcohol in their own way.

However, as per rules, while alcohol can be consumed in the cantonment area, it cannot be taken outside its premises. Efforts are on to sort out the issue with the state government.

“Serving officers are being issued their quota of alcohol but it has been stopped for ex-servicemen,” a defence official was quoted in The Hindu. .

“You cannot deny alcohol to ex-servicemen,” an officer observed, stating that senior Army officials had discussed the issue with the Bihar government at the highest levels to hammer out a solution.

The example of another dry state, Gujarat, is cited in this regard. Serving and retired defence personnel  get their quota of liquor to consume at their homes.
