Special session of Bihar Assembly to pass GST Bill on August 16

Patna,(BiharTimes): A one-day special session of the Bihar Assembly has been convened on August 16 to ratify Goods and Services Tax Constitution Amendment Bill.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar said on Saturday that the state Assembly would adopt a one-line resolution to this effect in its one-day session convened on August 16.

Thus after Assam, Bihar would be the second state to ratify it. At least half of the State Assemblies––15 out of 29––will have to pass this Bill.

According to Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary the House was adjourned sine die on August 4 but was not yet prorogued by the Governor. On request by the chief minister that he wants an official business and a letter from the Lok Sabha Secretariat requesting the Assembly to get the GST Bill ratified, a meeting has been convened on August 16.

He said had the Governor prorogued the Assembly then there would have been a requirement for a special session on the request of the cabinet.

Experts are of the view that the state government is taking special interest in the passage of the GST Bill as the state is likely to get an additional revenue of around Rs 8,000 to Rs9,000 crore depending on the rate which will be fixed once the Act is in place.

Post-prohibition Bihar has already been facing decline in internal revenue.
