SuMo contests Nitish, flood experts on Farakka Barrage issue

Patna,(BiharTimes): When experts like Dinesh Kumar Mishra,  Ranjeev, Hemant etc have, for the last couple of decades been holding Farakka Barrage responsible for the silt deposition and recurring flood in Bihar senior BJP leader and former state deputy CM, Sushil Kumar Modi, has something else to say.

Quoting Union ministry of water resources department officials he said there is no scientific evidence to prove that floods occurred in Bihar due to Farakka Barrage. Instead he accused chief minister Nitish Kumar of raising the Farakka Barrage issue and silt management policy to deflect attention from poor relief and rehabilitation works.

He said the chief minister, who is himself an engineer, should have waited for report of WAPCOS study which the Bihar government has authorized to conduct on effect of Farakka and silt deposition..

SuMo countered Nitish’s claim that the sluice gates of Farakka were opened after the Bihar government demanded so. The BJP leader said that the gates remained open in monsson.

However, he did not say anything on Lalu Prasad’s allegation that the MP government opened the gates of Bansagar Dam very late, which caused widespread flooding in Bihar.
