SuMo’s statement in defence of Farakka absurd: Experts

Patna,(BiharTimes): Anti-big dam activists have termed former Bihar deputy chief minister’s statement that there is no scientific evidence to prove that floods occurred in Bihar due to Farakka Barrage as absurd and outlandish.

One of them, who is even an author of a book on the impact of big dams, especially Farakka on rivers of Bihar, said that this is more than two decades old demand and thousands of pages have been written against Farakka Dam.

“Has he not gone through all these studies. There is no scope of politics on this issue. Why not ask Saryu Rai over the issue,” he told BiharTimes.

Saryu Rai is now a senior BJP minister in Jharkhand, who used to write extensively on floods and other related issues when Bihar was not divided.

Another activist, who too wished not to be quoted, went a bit ahead. He told BiharTimes that Sushil Modi is in the habit of issuing ‘anaap-shanaap’ (silly and ridiculous) remarks. He used to say something else while in power and something different, when out of power.

Meanwhile, CPI (M), which was in power in West Bengal for 34 long years, on Friday demanded desilting river Ganga as such exercise would reduce the threat of flood in Bihar.

Political analysts are of the view that there is no dearth of BJP leaders who are of the view that Farakka Barrage is responsible for recurrent floods in Bihar. They feel that SuMo should not shoot off his mouth on such issue.
