From Tarakant Jha & C P Thakur to Nityanand Rai: A backward journey of Bihar BJP

Patna,(BiharTimes): The appointment of Ujjiarpur MP, Nityanand Rai, as the president of the Bihar unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party is being interpreted in the political circle as a ‘backward’ journey of the saffron brigade.

With the leader of opposition in the state Assembly, Prem Kumar and leader of opposition in the Council, Sushil Kumar Modi, also coming from the backward castes, now all the three important posts are being held by them. It is other thing that the party still rely heavily on the upper caste support base in the state.

Political observers are of the view that it is not only the caste-wise that the BJP has ‘travelled back’. Even stature-wise the party has gone back. Once led by former advocate general, Tarakant Jha, and renowned doctor, C P Tharkur, the party is now led by a man, whom many accuse of having a questionable past.

However, it is also true that he is from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Bharatiya Juva Janata Morcha background.

“After its transformation from the cadre-based party to mass-based party the BJP is facing the problem, which other parties of the state are facing,” said an analyst.

Nityanand is the third Yadav after Jagdambi Yadav and Nand Kishore Yadav to head Bihar BJP.

His predecessor Mangal Pandey, a Brahmin from Siwan district, was considered close to Sushil Kumar Modi. Nityanand, however, according to reports, was directly appointed by the party’s national president, Amit Shah.

As it took eight months for the BJP to appoint a new man after Pandey’s term expired, it can be said that everything is not fine in the Bihar BJP, which is yet to recover from the shock defeat in the last year’s Assembly election.
