Do security guards empower elected representatives to take law into their hands?

Siddhartha

Patna,(BiharTimes): First a JD(U) MLA Sarfrarz Alam was accused of misbehaving with a couple in Rajdhani Express. Then a Congress MLA, Siddharth, figured in the news when a man lodged a case accusing him of kidnapping his daughter. It is other thing that the daughter appeared before the Patna SSP Manu Maharaj and told him and the media that she had actually married the driver of the MLA and that the latter had nothing to do with the incident.

Now an RJD MLA of Nawada, Raj Ballabh Yadav, has been accused by a school-girl of Nalanda district of raping her

Both JD(U) and RJD suspended the two MLAs––the Congress need not take this action as the case took a different turn. But JD(U) is yet to take action against Bima Bharati, MLA, and its Purnea MP, Santosh Kushwaha, for their alleged involvement in the escape of notorious gangster Awadesh Mandal on January 17.

Surendra Yadav

Rajballabh YadavThe truth is that they all have a controversial past. Raj Ballabh, for example, was accused of raping a girl in 1994. He was denied ticket by the then chief minister Lalu Prasad. But that after pressure from within the party, especially by the then chairman of the Minorities Commission, Jabir Husain. The victim in that case was a Muslim girl

An analysis of these incidents would reveal that these elected representatives are often empowered by the presence of the security guards.

Incidentally, the security personnel––who happen to be policemen––in one way or the other, become a party in the crime. These security personnel misuse their official position.

A few years back the NDA government in the state increased the number of security guards to kegislators from one to three.

In all 1,361 people get official security in Bihar.

Sources said that the state government is now thinking in term of reviewing this privilege as it is facing a major challenge on law and order front.

Besides, there is already shortage of police personnel in the state.
