Police station ransacked in Purnia, tension in Nawada village


Patna,(BiharTimes): A mob ransacked the Baisi police station in Purnia district on Thursday and set on fire several vehicles parked there during a protest against alleged blasphemous comments made by Kamlesh Tiwary, leader of a right-wing Hindu organisation.

According to police some people, under the banner of Islamic Council of India, took out a procession on Thursday to protest against alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) made by Tiwary sometimes back.

The protestors were led by former MLA, Syed Ruknuddin.

Police said a section of protesters stormed into the Baisi police station, smashed furniture and other equipment. They also torched several vehicles.

An FIR was lodged against 500 unidentified people in connection with the incident.

According to District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar Pal, who visited the spot, the situation is under control. Identification of those involved in the incident was being ascertained from video footage.

The Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Baisi had been asked to probe the incident.

Meanwhile, tension grips Amba village under Rajauli block of Nawada district following reports of an inter-community love marriage between a boy and a girl.

Shops remained close on Friday as well as Saturday. Some people did try to disturb the communal atmosphere but the police acted swiftly to check the situation from going out of control.
