Writers call on Nitish in Delhi

Patna,(BiharTimes): About a dozen writers led by poet and former chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi Ashok Vajpeyi met Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar at the 12 Lodhi Estate house of JD(U) Secretary General K C Tyagi on Tuesday. Others who accompanied him include Vishnu Nagar, Om Thanvi and Suresh Sharma.

Vajpeyi was among the first of about 40 writers who had last year returned awards to the Sahitya Akademi in protest against its silence on attacks on free thinkers such as Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, M M Kalburgi etc.

He called it an informal meeting with Bihar chief minister in which the current social and political scenario in the country was discussed. Intolerance and the increasing incidents of assault on plural ethos also came up in the meeting.

Vajpeyi later told the media that it is high time the people stood up against the assault on the autonomy of writers and the diversity of the country. He clarified that it was not a political meeting.
