HC strikes down election of BJP MP from Sasaram

Patna,(BiharTimes): Justice Kishore Kumar Mandal of Patna high court on Thursday struck down the election of BJP  MP from Sasaram, Cheddi Paswan, for failing to mention in his election affidavit several
criminal cases pending against him.

Paswan, a former JD(U) leader who defected to the BJP on the eve of the 2014 election, defeated the then Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar. He said he would challenge the verdict in the double bench of the High Court or move Supreme Court.

Declaring Paswan’s election “null and void”, the court said that candidates must disclose criminal cases instituted against them “prior to six months of filing of nomination”.

The judgment came on a petition filed by Ganga Mishra of Bhabua.Paswan, however, said that he did not mention the cases in affidavit as they were political, and not criminal, in nature.

Meanwhile, Meira Kumar welcomed the court verdict. On the other hand the leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Prem Kumar, said that his party respect’s the court ruling, but add that itwould chalk out the next course of action in days to come.
