Nitish, Tejaswi back Lalu’s proposal of quota for locals in jobs

Patna,(BIharTimes): Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday endorsed RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s demand for 80 per cent reservation for local residents in the Bihar government jobs as well as education.

Talking to the media outside the state Assembly the chief minister said that while he was in Jharkhand recently, he and his party, Janata Dal (United), favoured reservation of a particular percentage of jobs for locals. The quantum should be decided after discussions. The government can take any step in this regard only after a consensus is reached among all parties.

Nitish said the issue of reservation of jobs for locals has been raging across different states. The issue is relevant in today’s context.

"As per our Constitution, anyone from any state could go to another state in pursuit of employment. But now the issues of ‘localism’ and domicile are gaining acceptability. The Centre should intervene and clear if there was any provision in the Constitution for the same,” the JD(U) supremo said.

A day earlier Lalu had said that the policy of reservation for locals have already been implemented in states like Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh and doing so in Bihar would mean the people would stay back here instead of leaving the state in search of jobs.

Deputy chief minister, Tejaswi Yadav also said that the youths of Bihar should get employment in their own state so it becomes important that a policy be made in which there is reservation for the people of Bihar.
