PUCL questions government’s action against ‘minor’ Ruby Rai

Patna,(BiharTimes): The national general secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Vinay Kanth, has said that the Ruby Rai’s case needed to be handled differently and sensitively.

In a statement he said: “Her parents are responsible for it and not she. Why didn't the state government make sure that people like Lalkeshwar (Prasad Singh) is not made the BSEB chairman in the first place?”

He charged the state machinery with handling Ruby’s case with utter insensitivity and negligence.

"If at all she is a minor, it is gross violation of the rules related to the Juvenile Justice Act. Why didn't the police verify her age and announce it in the first place? It is quite an easy job for the police. Even if she isn't a minor, the authorities have hurt her pride and dignity,” Kanth, a renowned academic and human rights activist, said.

He is not alone. Social activist Satya Narayan Madan too questioned the manner in which witch-hunting is being carried out against the teenagers even before the real culprits were booked. He too held Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and his wife, Usha Sinha, responsible for the toppers’ scam and went on to ask who in the government was not aware about them.

“If you would destroy the whole education system by just distributing bicycles, what wouldthe students do. If the children are not taught in schools they would certainly adopt other means in this era of competitiveness,” he told BiharTimes.

The champion of women’s rights Kanchan Bala was more critical of former Janata Dal (United) MLA, Usha Sinha. She asked as to why the BJP is washing its hand of when their leaders too were in power when the whole government school education was being systematically destroyed.

“After all Usha was in the BJP before she joined the forces of social justice many years back,” she said.
Both Madan and Kanchan too were upset over the manner in which the media trial was carried against the students.

After the arrest sympathy is growing for Ruby, the youngest daughter of former amy personnel, Awadesh Roy of village Hasi Malahi in Vaishali district.

As parents are absconding there is no one to plead before a Patna court that she is a minor and should be sent to a remand home for juveniles.

She was remanded in 14-day judicial custody by the court on Sunday last.
