Strike-rate: More than one elected representative a month

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Grand Alliance government headed by Nitish Kumar will be completing its six months in office on May 20. But in this less than six months at least nine of their elected representatives were in the news for all the wrong reasons.

In a couple of cases it is their sons, who are responsible for landing them in trouble.

For example, Bindi Yadav, for all his notoriety, would not have been behind bars on May 8 (Sunday) had his son Rocky Yadav, a Master degree-holder in Political Science from Delhi University, not killed Aditya Sachdeva the previous night. Bindi’s wife Manorama Devi is the JD(U) MLC.

RJD MLA from Atri, also in Gaya district, Kunti Devi, had to pay the price for his son’s misadventure––he publicly beat up a government doctor a couple of months back. Her husband, Rajendra Yadav, is already in jail in another murder case.

January 17, 2016 will be remembered for not very good reason as on this day three JD(U) elected representatives shot into fame by their action. While JD(U) MLA, Sarfraz Alam, misbehaved with a woman passenger in Rajdhani Express while travelling from Katihar to Patna, party legislator Bima Bharati and its Purnea MP Santosh Kushwaha were accused of facilitating the escape of notorious terror Awadesh Mandal from police custody in that district. Awadesh is the husband of Bima.

While the party suspended Sarfraz it is yet to take any such action against Bima and Santosh Kushwaha.

Then a man accused the Congress MLA from Bikram, Siddharth, of kidnapping her daughter. However, later the girl, along with the driver of the legislator appeared before the Patna SSP to claim that they have married and that the MLA has nothing to do with it.

Then on February 6 Raj Ballabh Yadav, the Nawada RJD MLA, allegedly raped a teenager from Nalanda district. It took more than a month for the police to catch hold of him––and that too after his properties were confiscated.

Than came the famous ‘killing’ statement of the JD(U) MLA from Gopalpur in Bhagalpur district Narendra Kumar Neeraj alias Gopal Mandal. Later in April he, along with his body guard, was booked for beating a driver in Banka district.

In fact Mandal shot into limelight within a couple of days after coming to power of the Grand Alliance government when he threatened an official with dire consequences.

After the prohibition was imposed Congress MLA from Narkatiaganj, Vinay Verma, was caught on camera boasting that he can still arrange wine for the guests. Soon a case was lodged against him. However, he challenged the sting operation carried by a national TV channel.

Rocky is the latest in the ever-growing list. His mother Manorama Devi is a JD(U) MLC. She owes her position to her husband, Bindi, a strongman of the district, as he himself could not be elected for the Upper House because of his track record.

Political observers are of the view that if this rate of more than one a month––in fact nine in six months––continues by the end of five years––60 months––as high as 60, or even more, elected representatives would join this big league. The Grand Alliance has 178 MLAs, besides, MLCs and MPs. Thus one-third would at least bring ‘laurels’ to it––if this phenomenon is not checked.

The problem with Nitish is that the highest number of them at present are from his party, Janata Dal (United) to be followed by RJD and Congress.
