Lalu smells scam in Railways, fears privatization

Patna,(BiharTimes): Smelling scam in the Indian Railways former railway minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad asked as to how the railway is facing deficit when fares are going up and no seats are available on trains.

Lalu’s Saturday statement followed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which he accused the Centre of hiding revenue losses by setting up different committees with focus on cost cutting and slashing jobs. He had alleged that the Centre was taking steps to hand over the railways to corporate houses.

Without explaining the nature and quantum of the scam Lalu said he does not understand whether a scam has caused this deficit or due to deficit, a scam is under way.

He criticized the introduction of flexi-fares on premium trains as the formula essentially means that the longer you wait to book tickets, higher is the risk of fares going up.

The railways introduced flexi-fares on Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi in September. The flexi fares do not cover 1AC and executive class, which means they are applicable to 2AC, 3AC, sleeper class  and chair car in the case of Shatabdi.

Stating that the jersey cow, as he would call Indian Railways when he was the railway minister, has fallen sick Lalu said the government used to generate profit during his tenure between 2004 and 2009.
