Harassed tourists tour bank branches to exchange notes

Patna,(BiharTimes): Foreign tourists and pilgrims to Bihar––as elsewhere in the country––are facing acute hardship after the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. They come in large number in Bodh Gaya, Rajgir and Vaishali, especially in the winter season.

With Sonepur Cattle Fair to be inaugurated on November 13 and 350th birth anniversary of Guru Govind Singh to be organized later this year the Narendra Modi government’s action is likely to have impact on them.

Reports from Bodh Gaya suggest that the foreign tourists  were seen in long queues outside the local branch of State Bank of India (SBI) to exchange Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes with low denominations.

According to a Times of India report Nancy, who is leading a 39-member group from Singapore, yelled at bank officials for limiting the exchange to just Rs 4,000.

“I am not from any enemy country. I have not pumped fake currency in your country, then why are you harassing me?” she asked.

“I have to leave tomorrow and a large amount of unspent money is with me. What will I do with it?” she was quoted in the daily.

Bank officials expressed helplessness as they did not have the power to exceed the limit.

She was not alone; there are many other such reports coming from other parts with authorities having no clue to solve their problem.

The tourists were totally caught off guard as many of them had not hear prime minister’s speech in Hindi on Tuesday night.

Many of them had little currency of lower denominations amd they do not enjoy Paytm facility.
