Ex-AIIMS director arrested, released on bail

Patna,(BiharTimes): The founder director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna,  Dr Girish Kumar Singh, was on Monday arrested from the premises of this premier health hub of the state on the charge of Dalit atrocities.

He was produced before a special court, which granted him bail.

However, the court expressed surprise at the manner in which Singh was arrested.

A special court headed by Akhiland Dubey had earlier stayed the police from taking any coercive action against Singh, who is facing charges under Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.

Ashok Kumar, a senior resident of AIIMS, had lodged an FIR with the SC/ST police station. He alleged that the then director had hurled abuses, misbehaved and passed casteist remarks at him. He was also removed as senior resident at the hospital.

Reports said a deputy inspector-general of police posted at the police headquarters supervised the case and found the allegations against Singh to be true. Some other employees of the Institute were also made accused in the FIR.

Singh’s legal counsel, Imran Ghanni, told media that he would file a petition in court, seeking action against police officials for violating the court order.

Agitated over the police action, students, doctors and other employees of the Institute staged a sit-in on its premises on Tuesday.

Singh had served AIIMS-Patna from November 2011 to October 2016. He earlier headed the orthopaedics department at King George’s Medical College (KGMC), Lucknow, from where he had topped MBBS in his batch.

On October 31, he rejoined KGMC as professor and head of orthopaedics department.
