Fall in donations to temples, mosques

Patna,(BiharTimes): Donations to temples and mosques too have witnessed a sharp decline in immediate post-demonetization days.

However, with the passing of each day donations are picking up.

Some of these places of worship have even become money-changers as they normally have huge amount of coins and small currency notes.

In fact a temple in Ashok Rajpath had a unique scene on November 14, that is, on Kartik Purnima day. After taking a holy dip in river Ganga people were seen gathering there. Appeal was being made to devotees to donate Rs 500 and take Rs 400 in small currency notes.

In this way the temple committee members adopted a unique method to boost up the income in the otherwise adverse circumstances.

Similarly, donations in most mosques collected after Friday prayer declined on November 11, that is the first Friday after November 8 demonetization. But by November 18 it picked up as there is less panic and more cash.

The secne in various ‘dargahs’, where even some Hindus donate, is no different in the season where people are spending every penny very cautiously.

The scene is not very encouraging in the famous Mahavir Mandir outside the Patna railway station, where donation amount is counted every Thursday.

According to Acharya Kishore Kunal, chairman of the Mahavir Mandir Trust, the temple received Rs 4.50 lakh in the week ending on November 17 (Thursday). In the previous week, that is between November 4 and 10 the figure was Rs 5.02 lakh.

Kunal said that 69 banned notes of Rs 1,000 and 203 notes of Rs 500 were found in the donation box. He added that this week, the people have donated several Rs 10 coins too. This might be due to the rumours that fake Rs 10 coins are in circulation.

Kunal said usually the Temple receives one or five rupee coins in large number. But large donation of Rs 10 coins is quite surprising. He said that sale of ‘ladoos’ has also suffered due to the demonetization.

This is the situation all over the state, especially in places like Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Patna Saheb etc which are known for religious places.
