Junior Docs call off strike, but give ultimatum

Patna,(BiharTimes): Junior Doctors of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) returned to work on Thursday after giving the state government a 72-hour ultimatum to take action against principal Dr S N Sinha failing which they would restart their strike.

Dr Sinha reportedly slapped a Junior Doctor Dr Alok Kumar following a brawl over parking of the latter’s two-wheeler.

“The video footage does show exchange of blows between the principal and the doctor. It was clear from the footage that the principal first slapped Dr Alok, who was arguing with him while sitting on his bike. If the doctor was misbehaving with him, the principal could hand him over to the police. Why did he took into his hands,” said a PG student.

At present there is no formal association of Junior Doctors as the seniors have passed out.

As reported they had gone on strike on Wednesday afternoon after the principal slapped second-year postgraduate student Alok Kumar following a scuffle after Sinha scolded him for parking his bike in the barricaded area in front of the Emergency Ward. The student had slapped the principal in return after which, sources said, Sinha’s security guard thrashed the Junior Doctor.

Both parties have lodged FIRs against each other at Pirbahore police station while the college administration served a show-cause notice on the student asking him to explain his point within four days.

Dr Alok Kumar accused Sinha of misbehaving with him on caste lines. He had also lodged a case against him under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Reports said that the Junior Doctors decided to call off the strike after the anaesthesia department head, Vijay Kumar Gupta, met the students on Thursday morning.
