All is well, says Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance government

Patna, Nov 21 (IANS) The Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance government in Bihar on Monday released a report card on the completion of its first year in office.

The report card has been released, for the first time, on the official website of the state government.

It was scheduled to be released on Sunday, but Nitish Kumar cancelled it in view of the major train accident in Kanpur that claimed around 145 lives.

The over 138-page report card in Hindi, English and Urdu states that there is rule of law in Bihar.

Its main focus areas are Nitish Kumar's much-touted "7 Nischay" (seven resolutions) for development of all, and of course, the success of prohibition in the state.

"The government's priority is not simply to ensure provisions of basic necessities, such as drinking water, electricity and toilets. It also includes provision and expansion of essential infrastructure, such as roads, bylanes, drainage and bridges," Nitish Kumar says in the report card.

"We have resolved to establish institutions of higher, technical and professional learning, so as to make our youth competent and self reliant.

"All these elements have been incorporated to develop the framework of '7 Nischay' and the same has been included in the programme of good governance for 2015-2020," he says.

Referring to prohibition, Nitish Kumar says: "Compared to other attempts of prohibition, this attempt by the Bihar government is unique because effective enforcement system and people's participation are integral components of the campaign. With the support of all, the prohibition has turned into a social movement."

He adds that complete prohibition is leading to a more empowered, healthy and disciplined society, the effects of which will be visible in the development of Bihar.

"The prohibition is resulting in healthy citizens, economic betterment of families and reduction in domestic violence and social crimes. It has had a positive impact on the social harmony and an atmosphere of peace and goodwill can be witnessed in rural and urban areas," the Chief Minister says.

Last Saturday, the opposition NDA led by the BJP released its own report card on the Grand Alliance government's "failures" in the last one year.

The NDA report alleged failure of the ruling Grand Alliance on various fronts, saying Bihar has been in a "bad shape" in the last one year.

The Grand Alliance, led by Janata Dal-United leader Nitish Kumar, and comprising Rashtriya Janata Dal of Lalu Yadav and the Congress, will complete one year in power in Bihar on November 25.

Nitish has been holding the reins of power in Bihar for the past 11 years. Previously, he had an alliance with the BJP from 2005 to 2013.
