Bihar’s second Central University starts academic session from Gandhi’s land






Patna,(BiharTimes): In the 100th year of Champaran’s Satyagrah, Bihar second Central University named Mahatma Gandhi Central Universitystarted its academic session in  Motihari, the headquarters of EastChamparan district, on Tuesday.


Union HRD minister Prakash Javedekar inaugurated the academic session.Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh, a native of Champaran, and Minister of state of HRD, Upendra Kushwaha, were also present on the occasion. The new university will run from its transit campus at Zila School in Motihari till the new building comes up.


The university is going to launch 12 undergraduate and two postgraduate courses in the first session. The courses are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Zoology and Botany. In Arts it will offer studies in English, Hindi, Sociology, Political Science, History and Economics. It will also offer MBA and Masters in Social Welfare (MSW) courses.


According to vice-chancellor Arvind Agarwal the university has decided to start its academic session with focus on undergraduate courses, as the aim is to check the exodus of students, who after completing their Intermediate or Plus-2 move to other states for higher studies.


The first Central University of Bihar, now called Central University of South Bihar, is situated in Gaya. Earlier, the classes used to run in Birla Institute of Technology campus in Patna. In July 2012, the then Manmohan Singh government announced the Central University at Motihari, after chief minister Nitish Kumar made repeated demand for it.
