Rural Madhya Pradesh  top in open defecation, Bihar third

Patna,(BiharTimes): After Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, it is Bihar, the third most populated state, which tops the list of states where people defacate in open.

Besides, 40% of the community toilets in rural areas are not cleaned at all. After Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Manipur this is the worst figure.

According to the Swachhta Status Report 2016 released by Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation, the family members of 72.9% households in rural Bihar do not use toilets. The report was conducted in May-June 2015 covering 4,212 rural households in over 200 villages and 1,269 urban households in over 90 blocks of Bihar.

It said only 31.6% households in rural Bihar have sanitary toilets, against the national average of 45.3% while only 4.8% villages have community toilets, which is among the lowest in India.

The existence of toilets does not ensure that all the family members use them.

For example, the report found that only 44% community toilets are used in Bihar against the national average of above 80%. Only 0.3% people in rural areas and 3.2% in urban areas of the state use community toilet because they lack a sanitary toilet at home.
