SuMo seeks Nitish’s stand on triple talaq

Patna,(BiharTimes): Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Saturday asked chief minister Nitish Kumar to clarify his party, Janata Dal (United)’s stand on triple talaq.

Addressing members of state executive of the BJP on the second and concluding day of the meeting here at his official residence 1, Polo Road he said Nitish should break his silence on the issue at the two-day national council of Janata Dal (United) in Rajgir on October 16-17.

On the other hand party’s National General Secretary and Bihar in-charge Bhupendra Yadav, who is also a Rajya Sabha member and Supreme Court lawyer, said that both JD(U) and RJD should make their stand clear on the issue.

JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar has criticized the Centre for its design to impose Uniform Civil Court. However, he did not elaborate on the issue of triple talaq.

It needs to be mentioned that there are two opinions among Muslims over triple talaq issue and one is free to follow any school of thought.

However, independent Muslim scholars are of the view that there is almost complete unanimity among the community in opposing Uniform Civil Code. Even several women organizations, who oppose Muslim Personal Law on the issue of triple talaq are against the imposition of Uniform Civil Code. The confusion has been caused more because many mediapersons and BJP leaders do not have clear idea about the issue--or may be deliberately doing so.
