Nitish trying to drive wedge between Akhilesh, Mulayam

Patna,(BiharTimes): By praising Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Singh and targeting his father Mulayam Singh Yadav at Rajgir on Monday the newly appointed Janata Dal (United) president tried to drive a wedge between the duo in the neighbouring state.

Nitish, who has made eight trips to Uttar Pradesh in the last 11 months is in search of consolidating his support base in that state.

“Akhilesh is young and energetic. He has performed well. We will fully back him if he implements prohibition in Uttar Pradesh. And if he really wants to come out from the shadow of family feud and emerge a consistent winner in election, he should enforce prohibition,” the Bihar CM was quoted as saying.

Nitish did not stop there. He went on to cite an old saying: “no risk no gain.” Akhilesh should take this risk to come out of the family feud and keep winning.”

But while delivering his speech at Rajgir Nitish made it known how upset he is over the way Mulayam behaved last year when he offered him the presidentship of the parties of Janata Parivar.

“We gave him chair and all powers. But you saw what he did in Bihar during the election campaigns. Probably, the curse of what he did against what we did for him has befallen him and his family,” Nitish said in his maiden speech after officially taking over as the party president.

It needs to be recalled that it was in December 2014 that Nitish first coined the idea of Mahagathbandan which also included Samajwadi Party. By mid-April 2015 everything was going well and merger was very much on cards.

But in May 2015 Mulayam’s cousin Ram Gopal Yadav rejected the very idea of the merger of half a dozen parties of Janata Parivar. While RJD chief Lalu Prasad remained cool, obviously because of his family relationship with Mulayam, his Chote Bhai, Nitish Kumar, was very upset.

Political observers are of the view that Nitish wants to pay Mulayam back in the same coin. Therefore, in spite of the need for larger secular alliance, he has not forgiven the SP supremo.
