BSEB smashes Arts, Science, Commerce barriers for Plus-2 students

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) has decided to do away with the stream-based test pattern from 2017, that is, there would be no separate streams of Arts, Science and Commerce in Intermediate.

Now, a student can opt for any three subjects from Arts, Commerce or Science stream. Apart from this, they will have to take two languages and one extra subject of their choice.

The students taking admission in Class XI in the BSEB affiliated schools/colleges in 2017 would opt for choice-based subjects from any stream.

According to the Board chairman Anand Kishor its Governing Body at its meeting approved the changes. The new system would be sent to the state government for its approval.

The chairman said this decision had already been taken while preparing the syllabus of 2007-09 batch, but the Board approved it on Saturday (Oct 22). This would provide options to the students in selecting their subjects.

The BSEB has prepared a list of 19 subjects from three streams that a student can opt for.

Earlier, a student studying  History could not take Chemistry. Or, someone studying Physics could not opt for Political Science or Geography.

Kishore said if private Plus-2 schools and colleges lacked teachers in any subject, they would have to inform the students before taking admission. In case of government institutions, the arrangements would be made.

On any move to change the syllabus he said the Board would consider doing so in language subjects only.

BSEB chairman said the basic idea behind introducing the new concept is to offer flexibility to students while choosing subjects. The system is much like the choice-based credit system (CBCS), which the University Grants Commission has asked universities to introduce.

So there would be nothing like I Sc, I A or I Com now; instead it would be replaced by Plus-2 or Class-XII.
