Liquor seized from Phulwari, Muzaffarpur, Rohtas districts; several arrested

Patna,(BiharTimes): Two days after the killing of Chandan Kumar in Maurya Vihar under Phulwarisharif police station of Patna by some alleged bootleggers police on Tuesday destroyed over 20,000 litres of countrymade liquor during raids at Govindpur Mushari and Nuniya Tola.

As reported three persons, including a police driver, Vikas Kumar, working on contract, were arrested on Monday in this incident.

In two separate raids in Muzaffarpur and Rohtas districts police seized a large amount of liquor on Tuesday.

According to Dharmendra Kumar, the newly appointed station house officer of Phulwarisharif police station, the illegal breweries were located at every house in Govindpur Mushari and Nuniya Tola and even in open fields. The police seized a large number of mahua, urea and containers for manufacturing liquor.

Mahua was being fermented in big plastic containers kept inside ditches and covered with soil to dodge the police.

At Govindpur Mushari, only women and children could be seen as the male members have fled away. A large number of police personnel has been deputed.

Inspector-general (IG) Patna zone Nayyar Hasnain Khan issued a directive to all superintendents of police (SPs) to review activities of drivers working on contract basis and special police officers.

He said: if there is slightest evidence of private drivers or special police officers coordinating with liquor mafia, action must be taken against them.

This instruction has been made because private drivers and special police officers, working on contract basis at police stations, are mostly local youths who assist police in their day-to-day activities.

Meanwhile, police on Tuesday seized illicit liquor worth over Rs.1.5 crore in two raids in the state.

In the first operation, around 350 cartons of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) were seized from a truck and three persons were arrested from Muzaffarpur. The value of the seized alcohol was estimated to be worth Rs 1.5 crore.

Police said personnel of the special task force (STF) intercepted the truck near Bazaar Samiti under the jurisdiction of Ahiyapur police station of the district During search of the vehicle, the officials found the 350 cartons of liquor.

The alcohol was being smuggled from Haryana, and being passed off as poultry feed.

According to Ahiyapur police station house officer (SHO) Vijay Kumar it seems that the alcohol was being stored ahead of Holi.

In another operation, the Rohtas police intercepted a pick up van and seized 18 cartons of IMFL and 10,000 pouches of country liquor. The seized consignment was being smuggled from Palamau district in Jharkhand.

The driver of the pickup van Jitendra Mahto, a resident of Navanagar in Palamu district, was arrested.
