SuMo contradicts RSS, seeks hike in quota from 50 to 60 per cent

Patna,(BiharTimes): Former Bihar deputy chief minister and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Tuesday called for a national consensus to increase total reservation from 50 to 60 per cent to ensure benefit to new castes accommodated in list of SCs/STs and OBCs over the last few years.

Ironically, his statement came just a few days after RSS leader Manmohan Vaidya’s demand to review reservations. Similar demand was made by the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in September 2015, just ahead of the Bihar Assembly election.

Speaking at a function organised on the occasion of 93rd birth anniversary of former chief minister Karpoori Thakur the senior BJP leader said over the years many castes have been included in the list of SCs/STs and OBCs, but the total reservation has remained at 50 per cent.

According to him there is only 37 per cent reservation in panchayats for SCs, STs and OBCs. There is still scope to increase reservation in panchayats by 13 per cent.

He requested the state government to increase reservation and pass on the benefit to the people from extremely backward castes.

SuMo went to the extent of saying that if the present government does not pass on the benefit, it would be done by the BJP whenever it comes to power in the state."

SuMo, it appears, have missed to mention 50 per cent quota for women in rural and urban local bodies. If the quota is increased by another 13 per cent no upper caste male would be able to contest the panchayat and urban local bodies’ election.
