Aurangabad DM denies making “sell your wife” remark

Patna,(BiharTimes): A day after the strong criticism by the Samajwadi Party, Juhi Singh, the district magistrate of Aurangabad,  Kanwal Tanuj, on Monday denied that he had made comments that those who can not build a toilet should sell their wives. He said that he was actually trying to appeal to the self-respect of the people during a drive to promote the Swacch Bharat Campaign.

Earlier, news agency ANI had reported that while addressing a public gathering in Jamhore village in the district on Saturdayhe said that women are sexually assaulted as they go out to relieve themselves.

“Due to lack of toilets, women get raped and harassed. It only costs Rs 12,000 for the construction of the toilet. Is 12,000 more than the dignity of one’s wife? Who can let her wife get raped in return of Rs 12,000?” Tanuj, according to ANI, said.

“If this is your mentality then go and sell your wife. Those who cannot build toilet should sell or auction their wife,” he added.

However, denying the report the DM accused the news agency of distorting the issue and said that it did not highlight the entire speech, but only a 20 second clip from 25 minutes long address.

Meanwhile, the > The Samajwadi Party on Monday demanded a strict action against him.

Party leader Juhi Singh was quoted by ANI as saying: “He is an IAS officer and they are trained to have control on their language. Their salary comes out of the tax paid by people. His remark is against his conduct rules. Action should be taken against him. I would want to urge the government and the chief minister (Nitish Kumar), to take strict action against him.”
