Nitish may take another U-turn, this time not so sharp

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has become so accustomed to taking U-turn that now he does not know as to how many times he has done so in his political career.

The first indication came when on Monday he asked his spokespersons not to attack RJD and its leadership, especially on the issue related to the demand of resignation of deputy CM, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.

The manner in which the scenario has changed in the last couple of days indicates that Janata Dal (United) chief is going to soften his stand on Tejashwi.

Nitish first met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday and then party chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday.

Observers are of the view that he has failed to convince not only the Congress leadership but a sizeable chunk of his own party leaders and legislators, who from July 11, had been cautioning him. This faction has the backing of former party president Sharad Yadav.

But Nitish, according to insiders, initially paid no heed to their advice and unleashed his spokesmen to attack RJD chief Lalu Prasad and deputy chief minister.

Analysts are of the view that Nitish misjudged the situation because of the pressure from the pro-BJP elements in his party and the regional media.

However, there is another version. It says that this is just a tactical retreat and Nitish may soon firm his stand. He has apparently softened his stand simply because he could not get right signal from the BJP. With neither the BJP nor the Congress, the two national parties, in hurry to back him, Nitish may at leasat postpone his plan to seek resignation immediately.

But there is one hurdle; that is, the Monsoon Session of Bihar Assembly, which is to begin on July 28. Will Tejashwi sit beside Nitish or not?
