BJP-backed Sita Sahu elected first woman mayor of Patna

Patna,(BiharTimes): When other municipal corporations, like Bhagalpur and Gaya, have already achieved this distinction, Patna on Monday elected its first lady mayor.

BJP-backed businesswomen, Sita Sahu, councillor of ward number 58 of the Alamganj area, was declared mayor after a close contest with the Grand Alliance, Rajni Rai, the councillor of ward number 22C of the Digha area.

While 38 councillors voted in favour of Sahu, 35 voted for Rai. Two votes were declared invalid.

Vinay Kumar Pappu, also a BJP-backed candidate,  won the deputy mayoral election, defeating the Grand Alliance’s candidate, Ashish Kumar Sinha. He got 52 votes against 23 by Ashish.

Though Patna Municipal Corporation elections are not held on party lines yet political parities lobbied hard to ensure victories of their candidates for the posts of mayour and deputy mayor.

Fifty-none years old Sita Sahu’s immovable property is worth around Rs 5 crore while she has declared movable property worth around Rs 11 lakh in her affidavit. She also owns 400 gm gold and 760 gm silver.

Incidentally, the BJP had initially supported councillor of ward number 2 Madhu Chourasiya and councillor of ward number 32 Pinki Yadav for the mayoral post.

The JD(U) backed councillor of ward number 22C Rajni from the beginning.

Reports said that BJP MLAs Nitin Navin, Arun Kumar Sinha, Sanjeev Chourasiya and MLC Suraj Nand Kushwaha campaigned for Sahu and Pappu.

JD(U) MLA Shyam Rajak and MLC Sanjay Singh lobbied for Rajni.
