Madhepura electric locomotive plant starts production





Patna,(BiharTimes): French multinational company Alstom started production of electric locomotives in its Madhepura plant on October 11. The production started a year ahead of schedule.

The first locomotive from the factory is expected to roll out early next year.

Sources said the first five locomotives would be completed by 2019. The production will gradually pick up and 35 locomotives are likely to be produced in 2020 and 60 in 2021.

After that, 100 locomotives will be manufactured till the target of 800 is met.

The project is a joint venture between Alstom, and Indian Railways with a stake of 74 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively. Alstom will invest Rs 1,200 crore for this project that has come up on 250 acres of land.

Alstom has employed 70 persons with plans to increase by 25 per cent every year till the plant reaches full capacity.

The diesel and electric locomotive plants at Swarn and Madhepura respectively were conceptualised when Lalu Prasad was the railway minister in the UPA-I (2004-09) government.
