Ranchi, Feb 12 (IANS) A Ranchi court on Monday awarded death sentence to a person convicted for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in 2014, a lawyer said.
The court of Shivapal Singh pronounced the quantum of sentence on Monday on Gandhi Oraon, who was convicted for the crime on January 31.
Oraon, a bus driver's assistant, raped the minor at the Khadgara bus stand on March 21, 2014 after luring her away by promising her a chocolate.
As the girl kept crying after the rape, he crushed her head with a big stone. The body was found the next day.
The girl's father lodged an FIR against Oraon, who was arrested while he was trying to flee to West Bengal. The accused has been in jail since 2014.
