Ranvir Sena chief's death anniversary commemorated as Martyr Day

Patna, June 1 (IANS) The death anniversary of slain Ranvir Sena chief Brahameshwar Singh Mukhiya was commemorated as 'Martyr Day' here on Friday.

"Brahameshwar Singh Mukhiya was a farmer leader who fought for the rights and protection of farmers," Swarn Sena's national convener Bhagwat Sharma said.

Brahameshwar Singh was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on June 1, 2012, in Ara, the district headquarters of Bhojpur, about 60 km from here.

His killing had triggered violent protests by his supporters and sympathisers who constituted the upper caste militia.

Brahameshwar Singh founded the Ranvir Sena as an army of the landed sections of society, which was accused of many caste killings, mostly of the poorest of the poor Dalits in the 80s and 90s.

The CBI has been probing his killing but has been unable to crack the case. Half a dozen people were arrested by police after his killing.

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Griraj Singh in 2012 described Brahameshwar Singh Mukhiya as a "Gandhian".
