Patna, April 1, 2026 | (BiharTimes) Bihar has marked a major milestone in fiscal performance, registering a historic surge in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections and surpassing the national average by a significant margin. The state recorded a gross GST collection of ₹32,801.35 crore in the financial year 2025–26, reflecting an 11.67 percent increase over the previous year. After IGST adjustments, the net GST collection stood at ₹32,077.22 crore, indicating a strong growth of 9.20 percent.
The state's performance has been particularly notable in March 2026, when Bihar posted a 13 percent growth rate in GST collections—well above the national average of 5 percent. On a cash collection basis, the state registered a 10.60 percent increase, compared to the national average of 6.40 percent, highlighting both improved compliance and expanding economic activity.
Bihar has secured the fourth position among large states in terms of overall growth in tax collection, underlining sustained improvements in tax administration, monitoring systems, and governance. The total tax revenue of the state, including GST and non-GST sources, reached ₹43,324.79 crore in 2025–26, marking a 4.09 percent increase from the previous financial year. Against a target of ₹46,500 crore, the state achieved 93.17 percent of its projected collection.
Officials have attributed this strong performance to data-driven monitoring, risk-based assessments, and enhanced engagement with taxpayers, which have contributed to broadening the tax base and ensuring stable revenue growth. The commercial taxes department has indicated that further reforms aimed at simplifying the tax system, improving transparency, and strengthening taxpayer services are in the pipeline to sustain this momentum.
Experts believe the growth reflects strengthening economic fundamentals in Bihar, including increased trade activity and better compliance. If this trajectory continues, the state is well-positioned to emerge as one of the leading performers in tax collection across India.
